Flower Residency is a no-cost painting residency founded in 2024 by David Maxwell, based in a private guest house in his Atwater Village backyard. Each resident gets five weeks, a furnished space, a living and materials stipend, and the freedom to make work — typically at least five paintings — with everything from canvases to studio visits arranged around them.
What makes it different isn't just the space. It's the people around it: a board of artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors — the Flower Petals — who visit residents' studios throughout their stay, vote on future applicants, and show up for the work at the end.
