Flower Residency is a no-cost painting residency founded in 2024 by David Maxwell, based in a private guest house in his Atwater Village backyard. Each resident gets five weeks, a furnished space, a living and materials stipend, and the freedom to make work (typically at least five paintings), with everything from canvases to studio visits arranged around them.
What makes it different isn't just the space. It's the people around it: a board of artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors, known as the Flower Petals, who visit residents' studios throughout their stay, vote on future applicants, and show up for the work at the end.
